1. What is place value?
Ans: The position of a digit in a number that is used to determine the value of the digit.
Example:
in 5,318 the 3 is in the hundreds place. So, the 3 has a value of 300.
2. What is digit?
Ans: The symbols used to show numbers: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
Whole numbers : The numbers 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and so on.
The exponent is the number that tells how many times a base number is used as a factor.
Ex: Tom's new horse weighs about 1,000 pounds.
How can you show 1,000 as a power of 10 using an exponent?
1000 = 10 X 10 X 10 = 103
Expanded form:
A way to write a number that shows the place value of each digit
Example:
3 X 1,000 + 5 X 100 + 6 X 10 + 2 X 1
Standard Form:
A common way of writing a number with commas is by separating groups of three digits starting from the right.
Ex: 3,458,901
Value of a digit:
The number a digit represents, which is determined by the position of the digit; see also place value.
