Average Speed

The distance travelled in unit time by an object is called its speed.
Average speed is defined as distance travelled per unit time.
For example, if you cycle 2.4 km in 10 minutes, then your average speed would be
                      2400 m/ 10 x 60 s
                        =  24/6 m/s
                         = 4 m/s

1. The distance between Mumbai and Pune is 180 km. A bus takes about 4 hours to cover the distance. What is the average speed of the bus?

Solution:
Average speed  = Distance / time
                          = 180/4 km/h
                          = 45 km/h

The most commonly used units for speed are km/h and m/s.

Speed  = Distance/Time
Distance = Speed x Time

Time = Distance covered / Speed

Average speed is defined as distance travelled per unit time. It is calculated when the distance travelled per hour is not uniform due to stoppage, slowing down etc.

2. A train travels for 3 hours at a speed of 121 km/h. How much distance does it cover in that time?

Applying the unitary method, we get:
In 1 hour, the train travels 121 km
In 3 hours, the train travels   121 x 3 = 363 km

Thus, we observe that

Distance = Speed x Time

 Solution:
Time taken for first part of journey   =  40/40
                                                               = 1 hour
  Time taken for second part of journey  = 70 - 40 / 60
                                                                  = 30 / 60
                                                                 = 1/2 hour
                                Total time taken   = 1 + 1/2

Multi-step Word Problems!

Q1. Samantha is saving up to buy a new bicycle for $250. She already has $50 saved. Samantha plans to save $20 per week from her allowance.
How many weeks will it take Samantha to save enough money to buy the bicycle?

Step 1: Calculate how much more money Samantha needs to save.
$250 (cost of the bicycle) - $50 (amount already saved) = $200
Step 2: Calculate the number of weeks it will take Samantha to save enough money.
$200 (amount needed) ÷ $20 (amount saved per week) = 10 weeks
It will take Samantha 10 weeks to save enough money to buy the bicycle.

Q.2. Rachel is training for a marathon, and she sets a weekly goal of running 32 kilometres. She already ran 10 kilometres on Monday and 12 kilometres on Wednesday.
How many kilometres does she need to run on Tuesday and Thursday (both equally) to reach her weekly goal of 32 kilometres?
Step 1: Calculate the total distance she has already run.
Total distance run = 10 km + 12 km = 22 km
Step 2: Determine how many kilometers she still needs to run.
Weekly goal - Total distance run = 32 km - 22 km = 10 km
Step 3: Divide the distance by the number of days left (Tues + Thurs).
10 km ÷ 2 days = 5 km per day
Rachel needs to run 5 kilometres on both Tuesday and Thursday to reach her weekly goal of 32 kilometres.

Q.3. A group of students are conducting a plant growth experiment. They start with a small plant that is 24 centimetres tall. The plant grows by 20% in the first week.
How tall is the plant after the first week?
Step 1: Calculate the growth in height.
20% of 24 = 4.8 cm (double)
Step 2: Add the growth to the initial height.
Initial height + Growth = 24 cm + 4.8 cm = 28.8 cm
The plant is 28.8 centimetres tall after the first week.

Q.4. Samantha is baking a batch of brownies to share with her friends. She needs 3 cups of sugar for the recipe. Unfortunately, she only has a 1/3  measuring cup.
How many 1/3 measuring cups does she need to make 3 cups of sugar?
Step 1: Calculate how many 1/3 cups are needed for 1 whole cup.
1 cup = 1/3 cup + 1/3 cup + 1/3 cup
OR
1 cup = 3 x 1/3 cup
Step 2: Calculate how many times she needs to use the 1/3 cup     for 3 whole cups.
3 x 1/3 cups x 3 = 9 1/3 cups
Samantha needs to use the 1/3 measuring cup 9 times to measure 3 cups of sugar.
