  American Revolution A revolution is the overthrow of one government, and its replacement with another.  In this lesson, you learned how the colonists defeated the British to become a new country. The weaker side won because of some special advantages. From 1775 to 1783, the colonists fought the British to win their independence. At first, Great Britain seemed sure to succeed. I had the largest navy in the world, and its army was made up of skilled, full-time solders. The Continental army of the colonies, however, was small and untrained.  The Continental army and navy were weaker than those of the British.
